Background: Pure vegetarian diets might cause cobalamin deficiency due to lack of dietary intake. [] Key Method Results: 49 subjects were tested. Most subjects (10th to 90th percentile) had followed this diet 23–49 months. 6 subjects had serum B12 concentrations <147 pmol/l (200 pg/ml). 37 subjects (76%) had serum B12 concentrations <221 pmol/l (300 pg/ml). 23 subjects (47%) had abnormal urinary MMA concentrations above or equal to 4.0 µg/mg creatinine. Sublingual cyanocobalamin and nutritional yeast, but…

Methylmalonic Acid Levels and their Relation with Cobalamin Supplementation in Spanish Vegetarians
TLDR
Spanish vegetarians have low risk of vitamin B 12 deficiency due to vitamin B12 supplementation and the MMA determination is useful to detect mild deficiency.
Plasma cobalamin and folate and their metabolic markers methylmalonic acid and total homocysteine among Egyptian children before and after nutritional supplementation with the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus in yoghurt matrix
TLDR
The long-term ingestion of viable probiotic La1 potentially promoted the overall nutritional status of the studied children.
Nutrient Requirements Long-Term Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian Diet Impairs Vitamin B-12 Status in Pregnant Women 1
TLDR
Serum vitamin B-12 concentrations increased and plasma tHcy decreased sharply with increasing dietary intake of vitamin B/d toward a cutoff point of 3 g/d, and current recommended dietary intakes urgently need reevaluation.
The influence of a whole food vegan diet with Nori algae and wild mushrooms on selected blood parameters.
TLDR
V Vegans following a whole food diet had a borderline supply of vitamin B12 and Vegans taking dietary supplements demonstrated satisfactory overall results.
Vitamin B12 among Vegetarians: Status, Assessment and Supplementation
TLDR
The status of vitamin B12 among vegetarians, the diagnostic markers for the detection of cobalamin deficiency and appropriate sources for sufficient intake are discussed, through the description of the features and functions of Vitamin B12 and its absorption mechanism.
Long-term ovo-lacto vegetarian diet impairs vitamin B-12 status in pregnant women.
TLDR
Serum vitamin B-12 concentrations increased and plasma tHcy decreased sharply with increasing dietary intake of vitamin B -12 toward a cutoff point of 3 mug/d, and current recommended dietary intakes urgently need reevaluation.
Vegetarian lifestyle and monitoring of vitamin B-12 status.
Position paper on vegetarian diets from the working group of the Italian Society of Human Nutrition.
Low plasma vitamin B-12 in Kenyan school children is highly prevalent and improved by supplemental animal source foods.
TLDR
The high prevalence of low plasma vitamin B-12 concentrations in these children is predicted by a low intake of ASF, and supplemental ASF improves vitaminB-12 status.
The prevalence of cobalamin deficiency among vegetarians assessed by serum vitamin B12: a review of literature
TLDR
Vegans who do not ingest vitamin B12 supplements were found to be at especially high risk, and vegetarians, especially vegans, should give strong consideration to the use of vitamin B 12 supplements to ensure adequateitamin B12 intake.

Vitamin B12 studies in total vegetarians (vegans).
The study aimed to assess the prevalence and rate of development of a low (below normal) serum B12 level in clinically well persons on a total vegetarian diet (TVD) with and without
Dietary intake and biochemical, hematologic, and immune status of vegans compared with nonvegetarians.
TLDR
V Vegans had significantly lower leukocyte, lymphocyte, and platelet counts and lower concentrations of complement factor 3 and blood urea nitrogen but higher serum albumin concentrations, and did not differ from nonvegetarians in functional immunocompetence.
Vitamin B-12 status of long-term adherents of a strict uncooked vegan diet ("living food diet") is compromised.
TLDR
It is concluded that some seaweeds consumed in large amounts can supply adequate amounts of bioavailable vitamin B-12 in the diet of long-term adherents of the "living food diet".
Vitamin B-12 status in a macrobiotic community.
TLDR
Vitamin B-12 status appeared to be unrelated to consumption of several vegetarian foods and was better with more consumption of dairy products or with higher tertile of reported frequencies of vitamin B- 12 consumption of various animal products.
Increased urinary methylmalonic acid excretion in breast-fed infants of vegetarian mothers and identification of an acceptable dietary source of vitamin B-12.
TLDR
This study tested the hypothesis that elevated UMMA in breast-fed infants is associated with decreased maternal serum B-12 concentrations and found that in three infants with high UMMA concentrations, vitamin B- 12 treatment led to an abrupt decrease of UMMA.
Serum vitamin B12 and blood cell values in vegetarians.
TLDR
Serum vitamin B12 and complete blood count values were determined for 83 volunteer subjects from an American vegetarian society conference (USA) and Macrocytosis among the vegetarians was minimal; none had mean corpuscular volume greater than 103 fl.
Vitamin B-12 from algae appears not to be bioavailable.
TLDR
It seems unjustified to advocate algae and other plant foods as a safe source of vitamin B-12 because its bioavailability is questionable and further studies on the specificity of current vitamin B -12 assays are warranted.

TLDR
Because TCII is depleted of vitamin B-12 within days after absorption stops, the best screening test for early negative vitamin B -12 balance is a measurement of vitaminB-12 on TCII (holoTCII).
Methylmalonic Acid and Homocysteine in Plasma as Indicators of Functional Cobalamin Deficiency in Infants on Macrobiotic Diets
TLDR
It is concluded that the determination of methylmalonic acid and total homocysteine represents a sensitive and specific test for the diagnosis and follow-up of nutritional cobalamin deficiency in infants.
