There are many situations where ad hoc networks are useful. You can think of this as meaning networks created for a specific purpose and which may have a short lifetime. They are referred to as infrastructure free. In the developed world these can be for meetings, vehicles or disaster recovery or for the military. Bluetooth networks are another example. In our country another use could be in remote rural areas.
