Surface observations indicate that the speed of the solar meridional circulation in the photosphere varies in anti-phase with the solar cycle. The current explanation for the source of this variation is that inflows into active regions alter the global surface pattern of the meridional circulation. When these localized inflows are integrated over a full hemisphere, they contribute to the slow down of the axisymmetric poleward horizontal component. The behavior of this large scale flow deep…

The meridional circulation of the Sun, which is observed to be poleward at the surface, should have a return flow at some depth. Since large-scale flows like the differential rotation and the

A theoretical model of the variation of the meridional circulation with the solar cycle

Observations of the meridional circulation of the Sun, which plays a key role in the operation of the solar dynamo, indicate that its speed varies with the solar cycle, becoming faster during the

A Model of Solar Equilibrium: The Hydrodynamic Limit

Helioseismology has revealed the internal density and rotation profiles of the Sun. Yet, knowledge of its magnetic fields and meridional circulation is confined much closer to the surface, and

Long Term Evolution of Solar Meridional Circulation and Phase Synchronization Viewed Through a Symmetrical Kuramoto Model

The solar-cycle oscillations of the toroidal and poloidal components of the solar magnetic field in the northern solar hemisphere have a persistent phase difference of about π$\pi $. We propose a

Implicit Large-eddy Simulations of Global Solar Convection: Effects of Numerical Resolution in Nonrotating and Rotating Cases

Simulating deep solar convection and its coupled mean-field motions is a formidable challenge where few observational results constrain models that suffer from the nonphysical influence of the grid

Ray Tracing of MHD Rossby Waves in the Solar Tachocline: Meridional Propagation and Implications for the Solar Magnetic Activity

Rossby waves have been recently recognised for their role in the large-scale spatio-temporal organisation of the solar magnetic activity. Here, we study the propagation of magnetohydrodynamic Rossby

A Potential New Mechanism for the Butterfly Diagram of the Solar Cycle: Latitude-dependent Radial Flux Transport

The butterfly diagram of the solar cycle is the equatorward migration of the emergence latitudes of sunspots as the solar cycle evolves. Revealing the mechanism for the butterfly diagram is essential

Dynamo models of the solar cycle

This paper reviews recent advances and current debates in modeling the solar cycle as a hydromagnetic dynamo process. Emphasis is placed on (relatively) simple dynamo models that are nonetheless

What Sets the Magnetic Field Strength and Cycle Period in Solar-type Stars?

Two fundamental properties of stellar magnetic fields have been determined by observations for solar-like stars with different Rossby numbers ( ), namely, the magnetic field strength and the magnetic

MERIDIONAL CIRCULATION DYNAMICS FROM 3D MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC GLOBAL SIMULATIONS OF SOLAR CONVECTION

The form of solar meridional circulation is a very important ingredient for mean field flux transport dynamo models. However, a shroud of mystery still surrounds this large-scale flow, given that its

Evolving Submerged Meridional Circulation Cells within the Upper Convection Zone Revealed by Ring-Diagram Analysis

Using the local helioseismic technique of ring-diagram analysis applied to Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) Dynamics Program data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, we have discovered that

MERIDIONAL FLOW IN THE SOLAR CONVECTION ZONE. II. HELIOSEISMIC INVERSIONS OF GONG DATA

Meridional flow is thought to play a very important role in the dynamics of the solar convection zone; however, because of its relatively small amplitude, precisely measuring it poses a significant

A Low-Order Solar Dynamo Model: Inferred Meridional Circulation Variations Since 1750

In this work we present the possible variations that the meridional circulation of the Sun might have undergone during the last 250 years. In order to do this, we reduce an α − Ω dynamo to a

IMPORTANCE OF MERIDIONAL CIRCULATION IN FLUX TRANSPORT DYNAMO: THE POSSIBILITY OF A MAUNDER-LIKE GRAND MINIMUM

Meridional circulation is an important ingredient in flux transport dynamo models. We have studied its importance on the period, the amplitude of the solar cycle, and also in producing Maunder-like

UNDERSTANDING SOLAR TORSIONAL OSCILLATIONS FROM GLOBAL DYNAMO MODELS

The phenomenon of solar “torsional oscillations” (TO) represents migratory zonal flows associated with the solar cycle. These flows are observed on the solar surface and, according to

Detection of Equatorward Meridional Flow and Evidence of Double-cell Meridional Circulation inside the Sun

Meridional flow in the solar interior plays an important role in redistributing angular momentum and transporting magnetic flux inside the Sun. Although it has long been recognized that the
