The classical method of chloride ion determination uses silver nitrate as the titrant. The yellow to brick-red endpoint color change in this titration is difficult to detect visually and therefore a great deal of variability in Cl/sup -/ content often occurs between operators. A large error in chloride ion content may lead to incorrect conclusions about mud properties. A drastic change in mud properties typically results in serious drilling problems.
