}The present study investigated the relationship between menstrual status and bone mineral density (BMD). Sixty-three elite female athletes competing at the regional level participated. Self-reported menstrual status, stress during the past 6 months, dietary intake of calcium, blood samples for hormonal study, mid-thigh skinfold thickness, triceps, iliac crest, spine and femoral neck BMD were determined. It was found that more than half of the athletes were eumenorrheic while almost half were…

Bone mineral density in collegiate female athletes: comparisons among sports.

Runners and swimmers and divers demonstrated some deficits in site-specific BMD values when compared with athletes in other sports, and athletic trainers should consider her mass and sport type with regard to her bone health.
Female boxers have high bone mineral density despite low body fat mass, high energy expenditure, and a high incidence of oligomenorrhea.

High BMD in boxers, despite low fat mass, high PAEE, and an increased incidence of oligomenorrhea suggest that boxing has a positive effect on BMD.
Dietary Habits, Menstrual Health, Body Composition, and Eating Disorder Risk Among Collegiate Volleyball Players: A Descriptive Study

It is suggested that collegiate female volleyball players’ diets tend to be inadequate in calories, protein, and carbohydrates, placing them at risk for subsequent medical ailments including menstrual dysfunction.

Explosive strength in female 11-on-11 versus 7-on-7 soccer players
- EducationSport Sciences for Health
- 2007
7FPs tended to have higher explosive performance during SJ compared to 11FPs, and they had a significantly lower elastic recoil index at all three evaluations, which may be due to the characteristics of 7-on-7 soccer, in which the neuromuscular and explosive strength demands are higher than those of 11- on-11 soccer.

Bone mineral density in professional female dancers.

Professional female dancers with a history of delayed menarche and amenorrhoea have been identified as another group of premenopausal women potentially at risk of developing osteoporosis because of a decrease in BMD at the lumbar spine.
Lumbar bone mineral density in adolescent female runners.
- MedicineThe Journal of sports medicine and physical fitness

It was concluded that there is no significant difference among amenorrheic runners, eumenorrheics runners, and controls in lumbar BMD, however, a longer period of amenorrhea might result in significantly lower BMD for the amenorrHEic runners.

Bone mass and metabolic features were studied in women distance runners and found that intense exercise may reduce the impact of amenorrhea on bone mass; however, amenorrheic runners remain at high risk for exercise-related fractures.

The probability of finding menstrual dysfunction in very lean athletes is high, but not absolute, and there is no assurance that dysfunction will improve merely by increasing body weight, while recent research on very lean, long term amenorrhoeic athletes who train intensely and show a loss of bone mineral is of concern.

Luteal phase disturbances occur independent of training volume, and volume of training does not have to be severe to result in menstrual disturbances.
