BACKGROUND Dramatic growth of meningiomas is occasionally encountered during pregnancy. While cell proliferation is often assumed, hemodynamic changes have also been touted as a cause. OBJECTIVE We identified 17 meningiomas resected during pregnancy or within 3 weeks post-partum and characterized them to determine the cause of occasional rapid growth in pregnancy. METHODS Seventeen tumors were identified from searches at 4 university centers. All available clinical records, radiology images…
Management and Pathophysiology of Meningiomas During Pregnancy: literature review and case report
TLDR
Meningiomas diagnosed during pregnancy, although rare, require several precautions to preserve mother and baby’s lives, taking into account the gestation time and tumor location.
Unique features of pregnancy-related meningiomas: lessons learned from 148 reported cases and theoretical implications of a prolactin modulated pathogenesis
TLDR
A hypothesis is developed that these features characterizing pregnancy-related meningioma growth are related to hormonal influences of the pituitary gland, and it is discussed that this may be due to elevated prolactin levels.
Meningiomas in pregnancy: timing of surgery and clinical outcomes as observed in 104 cases and establishment of a best management strategy
TLDR
While surgical resection of meningioma during pregnancy may be associated with increased maternal and fetal mortalities, the overall neurosurgical, obstetrical and neonatological outcomes, as well as many clinical characteristics, are similar to patients undergoing resection postpartum.
Management strategies for neoplastic and vascular brain lesions presenting during pregnancy: A series of 29 patients
TLDR
The association between a brain tumor and vascular lesions with pregnancy is a very unusual event, which jeopardizes both the lives of the mother and infant and remains incompletely characterized.

Management Strategy for Meningioma in Pregnancy: A Clinical Study.
TLDR
Intracranial meningioma during pregnancy challenges the skill of obstetricians and neurosurgeons to secure delivery of the baby and resection of the tumor, and pregnancy usually continues successfully to term.
Spinal meningiomas in patients younger than 50 years of age: a 21-year experience.
TLDR
Spinal meningiomas in younger patients have a worse prognosis than similar tumors in older patients, and younger patients there tended to have more tumors located in the cervical spine as well as a greater number of predisposing factors such as neurofibromatosis Type 2, radiation exposure, or trauma.
Spinal meningiomas: review of 174 operated cases.
TLDR
The early diagnosis of the disease and the use of microsurgical technique appeared as the most relevant factors for further improvement of the surgical results.
Malignant Gliomas with Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor‐like Components: A Clinicopathologic and Genetic Study of 53 Cases
TLDR
The primitive component of the MG‐PNET arises within a pre‐existing MG, most often a secondary glioblastoma, and may represent a metaplastic process or expansion of a tumor stem/progenitor cell clone; often shows histologic anaplasia and N‐ myc (or c‐myc) amplification; has the capacity to seed the CSF; and may respond to platinum‐based chemotherapy regimens.
Spinal meningiomas in pregnancy: report of two cases and review of the literature.
TLDR
The hydrodynamic and hormone-mediated mechanisms regarding meningioma growth during pregnancy and a review of the pertinent literature are discussed.
Sex Steroid and Growth Factor Profile of a Meningioma Associated with Pregnancy
TLDR
The growth factor profile of this tumour suggests the importance of PR, PDGFRB, and FGFR-2 as potential therapeutic targets, and provides clear clinical and imaging documentation of a meningioma associated with pregnancy.
Progesterone and estrogen receptors in meningiomas: prognostic considerations.
TLDR
Data indicate that the presence of PRs, even in a small number of tumor cells, is a favorable prognostic factor for meningiomas, and that the absence of PR, high mitotic index, and higher tumor grade were significant factors for shorter disease-free intervals.
Pregnancy-related primary brain and spinal tumors.
TLDR
It is concluded that different types of tumors are influenced at different stages of pregnancy, with gliomas and spinal vascular tumors accumulating in the first and third trimesters, respectively, while meningiomas gradually tends to increase during pregnancy.
Progesterone-receptor index in meningiomas: correlation with clinico-pathological parameters and review of the literature
TLDR
The highest PgR index in the authors' series was observed in patients under the age of 50 years with WHO grade I meningiomas of the meningothelial subtype and low cell proliferation indices, which suggests these patients should respond best to anti-progesterone treatment.
