The relation between women's timing of menarche and father absence was examined in a national probability sample of Great Britain (NATSAL 2000; N>5000). Current body mass index (as a proxy for childhood weight) was examined as a potential mediator of this relationship, along with the potential moderating role that siblings (e.g. number of older brothers) had on this relationship. As in a number of previous studies, an absent father (but not an absent mother) during childhood predicted an…

Brothers delay menarche and the onset of sexual activity in their sisters

Evidence that brothers negatively affect their sisters' onset of reproductive maturity and sexual activity is provided; however, this delay is not associated with a fitness cost in contemporary Australia.

Early menarche and its relationship to paternal migrant work among middle-school-aged students in China

It is suggested that the assumption that father’s absence for work influences the timing of menarche needs to be examined in the context of the quality of the father–daughter relationship and paternal care, which appear to play a critical role in the timing.

Age at Menarche, Depression, and Antisocial Behavior in Adulthood

The findings indicate that the emotional sequelae of puberty extend further than documented in previous research, and suggest that earlier development may place girls on a life path from which it may be difficult to deviate.

Early menarche and childhood adversities in a nationally representative sample

Evidence from this study is consistent with hypothesized physiological effects of early childhood family environment on endocrine development and the more generalized influence of highly dysfunctional family environments cannot be ruled out.

A Life History Theory of Father Absence and Menarche: A Meta-Analysis

A random-effects meta-analysis of correlations on father absence and daughter menarcheal age suggests that father absence was significantly related to earlierMenarche; effect sizes were heterogeneous.

The Impact of Father Absence on Daughter Sexual Development and Behaviors

Our study investigated the relationship among daughters from father-absent homes, daughters’ age of menarche, and daughters’ first sexual intercourse. This study was conducted as a paper-and-pencil

Childhood family disruption and adult height: is there a mediating role of puberty?

The findings indicate that disruption during childhood can have long-reaching health repercussions, particularly for boys, and that early childhood familial disruption is associated with shorter height for men, and is partially mediated by later puberty.

Father Absence and Reproduction-Related Outcomes in Malaysia, a Transitional Fertility Population

Father absence is consistently associated with children’s reproductive outcomes in industrialized countries. It has been suggested that father absence acts as a cue to particular environmental

Birthweight and paternal involvement predict early reproduction in British women: Evidence from the National Child Development Study

The results suggest that early‐life factors such as low birthweight for gestational age, and low paternal involvement during childhood, may affect women's reproductive development, leading to earlier target and achieved ages for reproduction.

Age of menarche: the role of some psychosocial factors

Sequential modelling showed parental rows, being a loner and the duration of CSA to be most important, although lack of a father and any CSA were each also independently associated with early menarche.

The antecedents of menarcheal age: heredity, family environment, and stressful life events.

Variations in pubertal timing, specifically age at menarche, have been associated with several antecedents, both genetic and environmental. Recent research has considered a broader range of

Childhood experience and the onset of menarche: a test of a sociobiological model.

In this study, the effect of family stressors on menarche was mediated by neither behavior problems nor weight, contrary to the predictions, and the most provocative proposition advanced by Belsky et al. received empirical support.

Father absence and age at menarche

Early menarche was associated with attractiveness ratings, the number of partners desired for the immediate future, and the early onset of intimate relationships, and was not linked with sociosexual orientation, mate choice criteria, and investment in the subjects’ own children, but these three markers were interrelated.

Toward a new understanding of early menarche: the role of environmental stress in pubertal timing.

Examining two family stressors, divorce and interparental conflict, in light of the Belsky et al. theory showed that, compared to girls from intact families, those from divorced families had an earlier onset of menarche.

Parent-daughter transmission of the androgen receptor gene as an explanation of the effect of father absence on age of menarche.

A genetic explanation of the father absence effect is proposed in which fathers carrying the AR alleles are more likely to abandon a marriage and pass those alleles to their daughters in whom they produce an earlier age of menarche and behavioral problems.

Stress and age at menarche of mothers and daughters

Summary The hypothesis that psychological stress during early childhood leads to advanced reproductive maturation was assessed using data from the California Childhood Health and Development Study.

Age at menarche: Influences of prenatal and postnatal growth.

It is demonstrated for the first time that both birth weight and weight gain in childhood are associated with age at menarche for girls from the Raine Cohort Study.
