Natural exposure to Plasmodium parasites induces short-lived protective immunity. In contrast, exposure to radiation-attenuated sporozoites (gamma spz) promotes long-lasting protection that is in part mediated by CD8(+) T cells that target exoerythrocytic stage antigens.
