OBJECTIVE: To determine the benefit of membrane sweeping at initiation of labor induction in conjunction with formal methods of labor induction. METHODS: Two hundred seventy-four women at term with a singleton fetus in cephalic presentation and intact membranes were randomly assigned to receive membrane sweeping or no membrane sweeping at initiation of formal labor induction with either dinoprostone pessary or amniotomy. Outcome measures included mode of delivery, induction-to-delivery interval… Expand

Serial Membrane Sweeping at Term in Planned Vaginal Birth After Cesarean: A Randomized Controlled Trial
TLDR
Serial membrane sweeping at term in women who planned VBAC has no significant effect on the onset of labor, pregnancy duration, induction of labor; or repeat cesarean delivery. Expand
Is membrane sweeping beneficial at the initiation of labor induction?
Abstract Objective: To determine whether cervical membrane sweeping during labor induction is beneficial. Methods: Outcomes of labor after induction in pregnant women at term were compared in aExpand
Membrane sweeping added to formal induction method to increase the spontaneous vaginal delivery: a meta-analysis
TLDR
A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trial studies to assess the effect of MS added to formal induction method on the spontaneous vaginal delivery, especially in nulliparas compared with formal induction alone found significantly increased vaginal delivery rates. Expand
Concurrent Dinoprostone and Oxytocin for Labor Induction in Term Premature Rupture of Membranes: A Randomized Controlled Trial
TLDR
Concurrent vaginal dinoprostone and intravenous oxytocin for labor induction of term PROM did not expedite delivery or improve patient satisfaction and there was no significant difference for any other outcome. Expand
The Efficacy of Membrane Sweeping at Term and Effect on the Duration of Pregnancy: A Randomized Controlled Trial
TLDR
Sweeping of the membranes at term is safe and reduces the incidence of post-date gestation and the induction rate in study compared to control group. Expand
Acupuncture and/or sweeping of the fetal membranes before induction of labor: a prospective, randomized, controlled trial
TLDR
The study was of a sufficient size to demonstrate, in parallel, that sweeping of the fetal membranes significantly reduced the need of induction, sparing about 15% for formal induction of labor. Expand
Membrane sweeping for induction of labour.
TLDR
The risk of bias was assessed as low or unclear risk in most domains across studies, and evidence certainty was found to be generally low, mainly due to study design, inconsistency and imprecision. Expand
Comparison of Two Methods in Labor Induction in Nulliparous Women with Unfavorable Cervix at Term: Oxytocin Alone Versus Dinoprostone Vaginal Slow-Release System (Propess®) + Oxytocin
TLDR
The use of dinoprostone vaginal slow-release system plus oxytocin for labor induction in nulliparous women with unfavorable cervix at term seems to be more effective than oxytoc in alone. Expand
Membrane Sweeping for Prevention of Post-Maturity in Low-Risk Term Pregnancies : A Randomized Controlled Trial
Objective: To study the efficacy of membrane sweeping at term pregnancy for initiation of labor and prevention of post-maturity and its’ co-morbidity. Study Design: A randomized controlled trial wasExpand
Effect of Coital Activity on Onset of Labor in Women Scheduled for Labor Induction: A Randomized Controlled Trial
TLDR
Among women scheduled for labor induction who were advised to have sex, the increase in sexual activity did not increase the rate of spontaneous labor. Expand

Membrane Sweeping in Conjunction With Labor Induction
TLDR
Sweeping of the membranes during induction of labor had a beneficial effect on labor and delivery, which appeared to be limited to nulliparas with unfavorable cervices who needed cervical priming with PGE2. Expand
Membrane sweeping for induction of labour.
TLDR
Routine use of sweeping of membranes from 38 weeks of pregnancy onwards does not seem to produce clinically important benefits and the reduction in the use of more formal methods of induction needs to be balanced against women's discomfort and other adverse effects. Expand
Effect of lower uterine segment sweeping on progress of labor in nullipara.
TLDR
Lower uterine segment sweeping did not reduce the need for oxytocin augmentation or lessen the duration of labor in nullipara. Expand
Factors affecting the likelihood of successful induction after intravaginal misoprostol application for cervical ripening and labor induction.
TLDR
The clinical characteristics of parity, initial cervical dilatation, and gestational age at entry are predictors of the likelihood of success of cervical ripening and labor induction with intravaginal misoprostol administration. Expand
Bishop Score and Risk of Cesarean Delivery After Induction of Labor in Nulliparous Women
TLDR
Compared with spontaneous onset of labor, medical and elective induction of labor in nulliparous women at term with a single fetus in cephalic presentation is associated with an increased risk of cesarean delivery, predominantly related to an unfavorable Bishop score at admission. Expand
Amniotomy plus intravenous oxytocin for induction of labour.
TLDR
Data on the effectiveness and safety of amniotomy and intravenous oxytocin are lacking and no recommendations for clinical practice can be made on the basis of this review. Expand
Outpatient management of the uncomplicated postdate pregnancy with intravaginal prostaglandin E2 gel and membrane stripping.
TLDR
It is concluded that intravaginal PGE2 gel combined with membrane stripping reduces postterm pregnancies and antenatal visits in patients. Expand
Vaginal prostaglandin (PGE2 and PGF2a) for induction of labour at term.
TLDR
The primary aim of this review was to examine the efficacy of vaginal prostaglandin E2 and F2a, and found that lower dose regimes, as defined in the review, appear as efficacious as higher dose regimes. Expand
Spurt release of oxytocin during surgical induction of labor in women.
TLDR
It was concluded that the main stimulus to this release was vaginal distention (Ferguson's reflex) and that the same mechanism probably accounts for the increase in maternal oxytocin during the expulsive phase of labor. Expand
Parturitional factors associated with membrane stripping.
TLDR
Membrane stripping was associated with increases in phospholipase A2 activity and prostaglandin F2 alpha concentrations, indicating a possible correlation with initiation of the cascade of parturitional events. Expand
