Melatonin is an ancient antioxidant. After its initial development in bacteria, it has been retained throughout evolution such that it may be or may have been present in every species that have existed. Even though it has been maintained throughout evolution during the diversification of species, melatonin’s chemical structure has never changed; thus, the melatonin present in currently living humans is identical to that present in cyanobacteria that have existed on Earth for billions of years…

Melatonin ultrastructural localization in mitochondria of human salivary glands

The results indicated that, both in parotid and submandibular glands mitochondria, a certain melatonin positivity was present and, within glandular cells, melatonin was less retrieved in mitochondria than in secretory granules; however, its presence in this organelle was clearly evident.

Melatonin Attenuates Mitochondrial Damage in Aristolochic Acid-Induced Acute Kidney Injury

It is revealed that melatonin could prevent AA-induced AKI by attenuating mitochondrial damage, which may provide a potential therapeutic method for renal AA toxicity.

Melatonin as a Chronobiotic/Cytoprotective Agent in REM Sleep Behavior Disorder

To what degree melatonin has therapeutic efficacy in the prevention of α-synucleinopathies awaits further investigation, in particular multicenter double-blind trials.

Suppression of NLRP3/Caspase-1/GSDMD Mediated Corneal Epithelium Pyroptosis Using Melatonin-Loaded Liposomes to Inhibit Benzalkonium Chloride-Induced Dry Eye Disease

TAT-MT-LIPs could efficiently suppress the BAC-induced corneal epithelium pyroptosis and inflammation by inhibiting mt-DNA oxidation and the subsequent signal transmission.

Melatonin and Kidney Health: From Fetal Stage to Later Life

This review aims to evaluate the recent literature regarding melatonin’s effect on kidney development, its clinical uses in the early stage of life, animal models documenting preventive applications of melatonin on offspring's kidney-related disease, and a thorough summary of therapeutic considerations concerning melatonin supplementation.

The Melatonin–Mitochondrial Axis: Engaging the Repercussions of Ultraviolet Radiation Photoaging on the Skin’s Circadian Rhythm

Findings about the circadian rhythms of the skin have broadened the horizon of a whole new dimension in the authors' comprehension of the molecular mechanisms of theskin and are likely to help pharmaceutical companies to develop more effective products that not only inhibit photoaging but keep valid and relevant throughout the day in future.

Bioactive Compounds from and against Yeasts in the One Health Context: A Comprehensive Review

This comprehensive analysis of the literature points out the significant roles of biodiversity, bioprospection, and genome editing tools on the microbial production of bioactive compounds and reveals the value of these approaches from the one health perspective.

Clinical trial on the efficacy and safety of NPC-15 for patients with xeroderma pigmentosum exaggerated sunburn reaction type: XP-1 study protocol for a multicentre, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, two-group crossover study followed by a long-term open study in Japan

A clinical trial is conducted on the efficacy of NPC-15 for patients with XP with exaggerated sunburn reaction type by a multicentre, double-blinded placebo-controlled, two-group crossover study followed by a 52 weeks open study.

Genome-wide analysis for the melatonin trait associated genes and SNPs in dairy goat (Capra hircus) as the molecular breeding markers

Previous studies have reported that the endogenous melatonin level is positively associated with the quality and yield of milk of cows. In the current study, a total of 34,921 SNPs involving 1,177

Delivery of pineal melatonin to the brain and SCN: role of canaliculi, cerebrospinal fluid, tanycytes and Virchow–Robin perivascular spaces

It is proposed that the elevated CSF levels are necessary to combat the massive free radical damage that the brain would normally endure because of its high utilization of oxygen, the parent molecule of many toxic oxygen metabolites, i.e., free radicals.

The cardioprotective effect of melatonin and exendin‐4 treatment in a rat model of cardiorenal syndrome

Combined melatonin and exendin‐4 treatment suppressed CRS‐induced deterioration of LVEF and LV remodeling, and biomarkers in LV myocardium showed an opposite pattern compared to that of LVP among all groups.

Protective effect of melatonin against the 1‐methyl‐4‐phenylpyridinium‐induced inhibition of Complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain

Results suggest that melatonin may protect against the effect of several Parkinsonogenic compounds that are associated with progressive impairment of mitochondrial function and increased oxidative damage.

Melatonin as a pharmacological agent against oxidative damage to lipids and DNA.

Critical Role of Mitochondrial Reactive Oxygen Species Formation in Visible Laser Irradiation-Induced Apoptosis in Rat Brain Astrocytes (RBA-1)

Laser irradiation-induced phototoxicity has been intensively applied in clinical photodynamic therapy for the treatment of a variety of tumors. However, the precise laser damage sites as well as the
