Many disorders of the CNS, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), are characterized by the loss of the myelin sheath surrounding nerve axons. MS is associated with infiltration of inflammatory cells into the brain and spinal cord, which may be the primary cause of demyelination or which may be induced secondary to axonal damage.
