PURPOSE OF REVIEW Anesthetics influence a wide variety of transmitter- and voltage-gated ion channels in the mammalian central nervous system. At the molecular level, the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) subtype A receptor has emerged as a primary therapeutic target.
