Self-renewal is an important character of stem cells. Embryonic stem (ES) cells continue self-renewal in vitro as a pure population, providing a good opportunity to analyze the molecular mechanism governing self-renewal. Intensive analysis in past two decades revealed the complex regulation of ES self-renewal by the multiple extrinsic signals that integrate into the transcription factor network in various manners, which may give a platform to analyze self-renewal in other types of stem cells.
