Biallelic inactivating mutations of the von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor gene (VHL) are a hallmark of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC), the most common histologic subtype of RCC. Biallelic VHL loss results in accumulation of hypoxia-inducible factor alpha (HIFalpha).
