Treating activated CD4+ T cells with DNA methyltransferase inhibitors modifies gene expression and induces autoreactivity. Adoptive transfer of viable polyclonal autoreactive cells causes a lupus-like disease, most likely because of one or more effector functions expressed by the autoreactive cells.
