Thermoanalytical techniques (DTA, DTG, TG), chemical and X-ray diffraction methods have been combined to study the course of oxidation of synthetic iron pyrite in a dynamic air atmosphere. Formation of ferrous sulphate by direct oxidation of pyrite was favoured upto 270°, followed by interaction of pyrite with ferrous sulphate, direct oxidation to ferric oxide and decomposition of iron sulphates.
