The success of Kepler’s dioptrics should not make us blind for the tremendous theoretical problems which the adoption of mechanicism as a comprehensive research program brought in its wake in the fields of philosophy, epistemology and theoretical psychology. It is not surprising that it was not until the days of Kepler that the dioptrical aspect of the problem of perception was (largely) solved although practically in ingredients for that solution had already been available since antiquity.
