We report a direct detection of muon-induced high energy neutrons with a 12-liter neutron detector fabricated with EJ-301 liquid scintillator operating at Soudan Mine for about two years. The detector response to energy from a few MeV up to $\sim$ 20 MeV has been calibrated using radioactive sources and cosmic-ray muons. Subsequently, we have calculated the scintillation efficiency for nuclear recoils, up to a few hundred MeV, using Birks' law in the Monte Carlo simulation. Data from an…

Neutron flux measurement using activated radioactive isotopes at the Baksan underground scintillation telescope

Preliminary results of a neutron background measurement at the Baksan underground scintillation telescope (BUST) are presented. The external planes of the BUST are fully covered with standard

Neutron flux and spectrum in the Dresden Felsenkeller underground facility studied by moderated He3 counters

Ambient neutrons may cause significant background for underground experiments. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate their flux and energy spectrum in order to devise a proper shielding. Here,

Development and characterization of a high sensitivity segmented Fast Neutron Spectrometer (FaNS-2)

A segmented fast neutron spectrometer based upon plastic scintillator and 3He proportional counters, designed to study comparatively low neutron fluxes, such as cosmogenic neutrons at the Earth's surface, in an underground environment, or from low-activity neutron sources.

Study of $\gamma$γ-ray background from cosmic muon induced neutrons

Abstract. The contribution to $\gamma$γ-ray background from secondary neutrons, originating from cosmic muon interactions in Pb-Cu composite shield, has been measured via

Development of the source calibration system of the STEREO experiment and search for sterile neutrinos at the ILL

The STEREO experiment has been proposed to give an unambiguous response to the hypothesis of a light sterile neutrino state (∆m 2 ∼ 1eV 2 ) as the origin of the reactor antineutrino anomaly. Its goal

Atmospheric charged $$K/\pi $$ ratio and measurement of muon annual modulation with a liquid scintillation detector at Soudan

We report a measurement of muon annual modulation in a 12-l liquid scintillation detector with a live-time of more than 4 years at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Muon minimum ionization in the

Neutron flux measurement at the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope

The characteristics of fast neutrons produced by cosmic-ray muons at the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope (BUST) are investigated. A novel approach to the problem consists in estimating the

The Super-Kamiokande Collaboration

A total of 614 upward through-going muons of minimum energy 1.6 GeV are observed by Super-Kamiokande during 537 detector live days. The measured muon flux is (1.74 ± 0.07(stat.) ± 0.02(sys.)) × 10
