}Abstract Background/objective: The relative balance between Th1 and Th2 cytokines appears crucial in the outcome of infections. We assayed the levels of some proinflammatory Th1 cytokines, interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), and anti-inflammatory Th2 cytokines, IL-4 and IL-10 in homozygous haemoglobin (Hb) AA, heterozygous HbAS-genotyped and sickle cell (HbSS) individuals with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Methods: Levels of Th1 and Th2 cytokines of 111…

Adaptive immune responses mediated age-related Plasmodium yoelii 17XL and 17XNL infections in 4 and 8-week-old BALB/c mice
- Medicine, BiologyBMC immunology
- 2021
It is considered that enhanced cellular and humoral adaptive immunity might contribute to rapid clearance of malaria among adults, likely in a PD-1-dependent manner due to induction of CD4 + T cells exhaustion in P. yoelii 17XNL infected 8-week-old mice.
Whole-Blood Transcriptional Signatures Composed of Erythropoietic and NRF2-Regulated Genes Differ Between Cerebral Malaria and Severe Malarial Anemia
- MedicineThe Journal of infectious diseases
- 2019
Compared with SMA, CM is associated with downregulation of Nrf2-related and erythropoiesis signatures by whole-blood transcriptomics, and future studies are needed to confirm these findings and assess pathways that may be amenable to interventions to ameliorate CM and SMA.
Insights and Hopes in Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell Transplantations
- Biology, MedicineJournal of biomedicine & biotechnology
- 2012
This review extensively presents the advantages and disadvantages of current hematopoietic stem cell transplantations (HSCTs), compared to UBCT, and describes the importance of cord blood content and obstetric factors on cord blood selection, and the recent approaches that can be undertook to improve cord blood stem cell expansion as well as engraftment.

This work has suggested that the administration of cells into an injured lung could be considered as a therapeutic method to repair and replace lost lung tissue using transplanted cells with the ability to proliferate and differentiate into alveolar cells, for IPF treatment.

In vivo production of type 1 cytokines in healthy sickle cell disease patients.
- Biology, MedicineJournal of the National Medical Association
- 1999
The results revealed comparable circulating levels of all type 1 cytokines in both healthy sickle cell disease and normal control subjects, with the exception of in vivo sIL-2R production.
Interferon production in sickle cell disease.
- Medicine, BiologyLymphokine research
- 1990
Results indicate that a significant percentage of SCD patients in both the steady state and infectious state associated with crisis, have impaired gamma IFN production, which may be another factor to explain the increased frequency and severity of infections in SCD.
Serum Levels of Substance P Are Elevated in Patients With Sickle Cell Disease and Increase Further During Vaso-Occlusive Crisis
- Medicine, Biology
- 1998
Serum levels of SP were elevated in all SCD patients and were highest in patients in pain crisis, implying that SP plays a prominent role in the pain and inflammation of SCD and may be a measurable laboratory marker of vaso-occlusive crisis.
Levels of Tumor Necrosis Factor α/Cachectin (TNFα) in Sera from Patients with Sickle Cell Disease
- Medicine, Biology
- 1993
Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor α/cachectin (TNFα) were studied in a group of adult patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and an inverse correlation was observed between the percentages of Hb F and the levels of TNFα found in the sera from the patients.
Activated monocytes and platelet-monocyte aggregates in patients with sickle cell disease.

It is concluded that there are increased circulating PMAs and monocyte activation in patients with SCD, as defined by intracellular expression of these cytokines.
Elevated immunoreactive tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-1 in sickle cell disease.
- MedicineJournal of the National Medical Association
- 1992
It is concluded that plasma TNF is frequently elevated in subjects with sickle cell disease, and IL-1 is also elevated in some subjects, and a direct role for these cytokines in the pathogenesis of vascular occlusion in sicklecell disease was not demonstrated.
Levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha/cachectin (TNF alpha) in sera from patients with sickle cell disease.

Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha/cachectin (TNF alpha) were studied in a group of adult patients with sickle cell disease and an inverse correlation was observed between the percentages of Hb F and the levels of TNF alpha found in the sera from the patients.
Increased susceptibility of malaria-infected variant erythrocytes to the mononuclear phagocyte system.
- Biology, MedicineBlood cells
- 1990
Increased susceptibility to phagocytosis of infected erythrocytes was found for a number of genetic variants involving the alpha-globin chain, and oxidative damage from hydrogen peroxide led to much more effective killing of parasites in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficient ery Throcytes than in normal ones.
Tumor necrosis factor alpha in children with sickle cell disease in stable condition.

It is indicated that most children with SCD in stable condition have normal TNF-alpha concentrations and that those with high T NF-alpha levels are more likely to have growth deficits.
