Customised avatars are a powerful tool to increase identification, engagement and intrinsic motivation in digital games. We investigated the effects of customisation in a self-competitive VR exergame by modelling players and their previous performance in the game with customised avatars. In a first study we found that, similar to non-exertion games, customisation significantly increased identification and intrinsic motivation, as well as physical performance in the exergame. In a second study…

Motivating Players to Perform an Optional Strenuous Activity in a Virtual Reality Exergame Using Virtual Performance Augmentation
TLDR
The results suggest that using VPA can significantly increase the time the players engage in the strenuous activity enriched by VPA, while in contrast to the hypotheses, no significant differences for the players' enjoyment and perceived exertion between the conditions were found.
The Effects of a Self-Similar Avatar Voice in Educational Games
TLDR
It is found that voice similarity leads to a significant increase in performance, time spent, similarity identification, competence, relatedness, and immersion, and the importance of avatar audio is demonstrated.
Flexing Muscles in Virtual Reality: Effects of Avatars' Muscular Appearance on Physical Performance
TLDR
It is found that participants in muscular avatars had a lower perceived exertion during an isometric force task and male participants embodying a muscular avatar had a higher grip strength.
Effect of Gameplay Uncertainty, Display Type, and Age on Virtual Reality Exergames
TLDR
Results show that when playing a motion-based first-person perspective exergame, virtual reality can improve performance, while maintaining the same motion sickness level as a large display, and exergames for middle-aged adults should be designed with age-related declines in mind, similar to designing for elderly adults.
What Type of Body Shape Moves Children? An Experimental Exploration of the Impact of Narrative Cartoon Character Body Shape on Children’s Narrative Engagement, Wishful Identification, and Exercise Motivation
Background The incorporation of narratives helps to enhance children’s engagement in active video games (AVGs), thus increasing moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Specific narrative
Physiological and Perceptual Responses to Athletic Avatars while Cycling in Virtual Reality
TLDR
It is found that the avatars’ athleticism has a significant and systematic effect on users’ heart rate and perceived exertion and contributes to the emerging area of VR exercise systems.
The Effect of Using an Auto-Generated Anime Avatar on Player-Avatar Identification
TLDR
It is posited that avatar customisation acts as a greater contributor than player-avatar appearance similarity to avatar identification in offline single-player games.
The Effects of Self- and External Perception of Avatars on Cognitive Task Performance in Virtual Reality
TLDR
It is shown that the perception by others affects cognitive performance and avatars’ appearance to both, the user and the others must be considered when designing for cognitively demanding tasks.
Audio Matters Too: How Audial Avatar Customization Enhances Visual Avatar Customization
Avatar customization is known to positively affect crucial outcomes in numerous domains. However, it is unknown whether audial customization can confer the same benefits as visual customization. We
Increasing Motivation of Walking Exercise Using 3D Personalized Avatar in Augmented Reality
. Walking is an easily accessible and effective exercise, hence it can be easily participated as a part of a person’s everyday. However, due to changes in our social environment such as the increase

TLDR
The results of a 2 x 2 factorial design experiment demonstrated the significant main effect of self-priming on interactivity and the moderating role of the actual-ideal self-concept discrepancy in influencing immersion during exergame playing.
Supplement for "Me vs. Super(wo)man: Effects of Customization and Identification in a VR Exergame"
This supplement describes an approach that can be used to create an “enhanced“ avatar based on a) a realistic, current avatar (R) and b) an idealised, desired future avatar (I) of a user. The aim of
Wii, Myself, and Size: The Influence of Proteus Effect and Stereotype Threat on Overweight Children's Exercise Motivation and Behavior in Exergames.
Abstract Objective: Exercise-based videogames, or exergames, provide a promising and novel way to improve exercise attitudes and behavior among overweight children. These digital interventions often
Fostering Intrinsic Motivation through Avatar Identification in Digital Games
TLDR
It is proposed that identifying with an avatar in a game will increase the intrinsic motivation of the player and it is shown that similarity identification, embodied identification, and wishful identification increases autonomy, immersion, invested effort, enjoyment, and positive affect.
Avatar Creation and Video Game Enjoyment
TLDR
The results demonstrate that the games’ competitiveness as well as the participants’ life satisfaction influenced avatar choice and identification.

Challenges in Virtual Reality Exergame Design
TLDR
This paper identifies and discusses major design challenges associated with the use of immersive technologies in exergaming: motion sickness caused by sensory disconnect when using a head mounted display, reliable bodily motion tracking controls, the health and safety concerns of exercising when using immersive technologies, the selection of an appropriate player perspective, and physical feedback latency.
