Matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes that regulate extracellular matrix turnover and aid in restoring tissue architecture following injury. There is an emerging role for extracellular matrix destruction in the pathogenesis of chronic neutrophilic lung diseases.
