Two diierent decompositions of the algebra of matrix valued pseudo-diierential symbols are considered. The two associated classes of nonlinear integrable equations in 2+1 dimensions are discussed within the framework of generalized Lax equations and Sato's approach. The two classes represent the multi-component KP hierarchy and a \modiied" multi-component KP hierarchy.
