Our knowledge about the mathematical accomplishments in India prior to 300 BCE is derived primarily from ancient Sanskrit texts, especially the Vedic and the Vedāṅga treatises. The Vedic literature traditionally refers to the four Saṁhitas (R. g, Sāma, Yajur and Atharva vedas), Brāhman. as, Āranyakas, and Upanis .ads.
