Uterine contractility is generated by contractions of myometrial smooth muscle cells (SMCs) that compose most of the myometrial layer of the uterine wall. Calcium ion (Ca(2+)) entry into the cell can be initiated by depolarization of the cell membrane. The increase in the free Ca(2+) concentration within the cell initiates a chain of reactions, which lead to formation of cross bridges between actin and myosin filaments, and thereby the cell contracts. During contraction the SMC shortens while…
Simulating uterine contraction by using an electro-chemo-mechanical model
TLDR
An electro-chemo-mechanical model to replicate the excitation, activation, and contraction of uterine smooth muscle cells is developed and enables efficient integration of knowledge about physiological processes at the cellular level to the organ level.
A myofibre model for the study of uterine excitation-contraction dynamics
TLDR
A computational myofibre model is used to study the dependency of electrical propagation and force development on intercellular coupling and cellular excitability and shows that inter cellular coupling alone does not regulate force development.
A computational model of excitation and contraction in uterine myocytes from the pregnant rat
TLDR
A computational model for describing the electrical activity, intracellular calcium dynamics and mechanical contractions of isolated uterine myocytes from the pregnant rat is constructed and provides a computational platform for further investigations of the ionic mechanism underlying the genesis and control of electrical and mechanical activities in the rat uterineMyocytes.
Smooth Muscle Contraction: An Electro-Chemo-Mechanical Process

TLDR
A multi-physics model is developed which accounts for the whole EC coupling chain and includes a three-dimensional finite deformation continuum model for the mechanical force generation.
A constitutive model for cytoskeletal contractility of smooth muscle cells
TLDR
The results suggest that the Hai–Murphy biochemical model neglects the strain rate effect on the kinetics of cross-bridge interactions with actin filaments in the isotonic contractions.

A Mathematical Model to Study the Regulation of Active Stress Production in GI Smooth Muscle
TLDR
A model is proposed to describe the regulation of myosin phosphorylation and active stress production in terms of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration and is the first step towards developing a dynamic model of GI SM contraction.
A Computational Study on the Effect of Intracellular Calcium Concentration and ATP on Detrusor Smooth Muscle Contraction
TLDR
The model was able to reproduce physiologically realistic contraction profiles and stress values that befits a smooth muscle and was used to estimate duty ratio and sliding velocity for the filament, under normal, loaded and pathological conditions.
A Modified Hai–Murphy Model of Uterine Smooth Muscle Contraction
TLDR
The Wang and Politi modified Hai–Murphy model of smooth muscle cell contractions is extended to capture uterine muscle cell response to variations in intracellular calcium concentrations and new parameter estimates for the cross-bridging can be coupled with uterine flow models to advance understanding of embryonic motility and intrauterine flow.

Intracellular calcium gradients in cultured human uterine smooth muscle: a functionally important subplasmalemmal space.
TLDR
The results suggest the superficial buffer barrier as merely one aspect of subplasmalemmal regulation of calcium dynamics, and emphasize the importance of store-operated calcium channels during dynamic calcium changes.
Carboxyeosin decreases the rate of decay of the [Ca2+]i transient in uterine smooth muscle cells isolated from pregnant rats
TLDR
Pre-treatment of the cells with 2 µM carboxyeosin led to a marked decrease in the rate of [Ca2+]i transient decay, suggesting that the sarcolemmal Ca2+ pump is involved in the calcium extrusion process.

The experimental findings suggest a third possibility, namely a sol-gel transition with a specific relaxation time constant, which would maintain a significant part of the cell population in the contracted-state until the intracellular-medium returns to its normal fluid behavior.

Findings indicate that a number of uterotonic agents effect an increase in [Ca2+]i, which in turn causes phosphorylation of myosin light chain in cultured human myometrial smooth muscle cells.
