OBJECTIVE To investigate maternal perceptions of both pain and anxiety before and after genetic amniocentesis. STUDY DESIGN This prospective study of midtrimester, singleton pregnancies was conducted between March 2000 and July 2000. Study variables included patient demographics, medical and obstetric histories, indication for amniocentesis and a description of the source of information used by the patient regarding the procedure and technical degree of difficulty.
