Direct chromosomal analysis of chorionic villi is becoming an established method of first trimester prenatal diagnosis, yielding results from the spontaneously dividing cytotrophoblasts in just a few hours (Simoni et al. 1984). Thus far, it has been assumed that the metaphases that are recovered by direct methods are of fetal origin.
