The nanos-class gene of the leech Helobdella robusta (Hro-nos) is present as a maternal transcript whose levels decay during cleavage; HRO-NOS protein is more abundant in the D quadrant cells relative to the A, B, and C quadrants; and HRO-NOS is more abundant in the ectodermal precursor cell (DNOPQ) than in its sister mesodermal precursor (DM) (Pilon and Weisblat, 1997). Here, using in situ hybridization, we show that Hro-nos mRNA is broadly distributed throughout the zygote, is concentrated in…

Transient occurrence of vasa-expressing cells in nongenital segments during embryonic development in the oligochaete annelid Tubifex tubifex
TLDR
The results suggest that T. tubifex generates supernumerary presumptive PGCs during embryogenesis whose number is variable among embryos.
Identifying the germline in an equally cleaving mollusc: Vasa and Nanos expression during embryonic and larval development of the vetigastropod Haliotis asinina.
TLDR
The results suggest that the H. asinina germline arises from the 4d cell lineage and that primordial germ cells (PGCs) are not specified exclusively by maternally inherited determinants (preformation), and infer that inductive signals (epigenesis) play an important role in specifying PGCs in H.Asinina.
Expression and function of an even-skipped homolog in the leech Helobdella robusta.
TLDR
The results suggest that Hro-eve is important in regulating early cell divisions through early segmentation, and that it also plays a role in neuronal differentiation.
Nanos Is Expressed in Somatic and Germline Tissue during Larval and Post-Larval Development of the Annelid Alitta virens
TLDR
Cloning an Avi-nanos ortholog from A. virens revealed that transcripts of nanos are expressed during differentiation of multiple tissues, including those that are derived from the 2d and 4d cells, consistent with the idea that the cluster of PGCs do not participate in regeneration.
Vasa and nanos are coexpressed in somatic and germ line tissue from early embryonic cleavage stages through adulthood in the polychaete Capitella sp. I
TLDR
A hypothesis concerning the origin and development of PGCs in Capitella sp.
nanos expression at the embryonic posterior pole and the medusa phase in the hydrozoan Podocoryne carnea
TLDR
The isolation of two orthologs of one such gene, nanos (nos), in the cnidarian Podocoryne carnea, a species with representative zoological features among the hydrozoans is reported, finding that the germline differentiates exclusively during medusa development, whereas the polyp does not contribute to the process.

A nanos homolog in leech.
TLDR
The observed expression pattern suggests that Hro-nos plays a role in the decision between ectodermal and mesodermal cell fates in leech.
Localization of polyadenylated RNAs during teloplasm formation and cleavage in leech embryos
TLDR
The results indicate that polyA+ RNA colocalizes with teloplasm during cytoplasmic rearrangements resulting in Teloplasm formation, and that it remains concentrated in the teloplasms during the cell divisions and a second cy toplasmics rearrangement during early embryogenesis.
Lox10, a member of the NK-2 homeobox gene class, is expressed in a segmental pattern in the endoderm and in the cephalic nervous system of the leech Helobdella.
TLDR
Lox10 is the first molecular marker of segmentally periodic endoderm differentiation reported for any animal species and is shown to encode a homeodomain sequence characteristic of a phyletically widespread NK-2 homeobox gene class.
Identification and characterization of a hunchback orthologue, Lzf2, and its expression during leech embryogenesis.
TLDR
Lzf2 is the first hb orthologue to be characterized in detail outside of insects and its expression pattern suggests that hb may have acquired a gap gene function in arthropods or insects after their phyletic separation from the annelids.
The leech hunchback protein is expressed in the epithelium and CNS but not in the segmental precursor lineages
TLDR
The location of immunoreactive cells during development and the similarity of the expression pattern of LF2 to the expression of the Caenhorhabditis elegans hb homologue hbl-1 suggests that LZF2 plays a role in the morphogenetic movements of leech gastrulation and later in CNS specification but not in anteroposterior pattern formation.
nos-1 and nos-2, two genes related to Drosophila nanos, regulate primordial germ cell development and survival in Caenorhabditis elegans.
TLDR
The results indicate that putative RNA-binding proteins related to Drosophila Pumilio are required for the same PGC processes as nos-1 and nos-2, and demonstrate that evolutionarily distant organisms utilize conserved factors to regulate early germ cell development and survival.
Cell fate analysis of teloblasts in the Tubifex embryo by intracellular injection of HRP
TLDR
The previously held view that ectoteloblasts and mesotelobasts are the main source of ectodermal and mesodermal segmental tissues, respectively is confirmed, but the results suggest that all of the teloblasts produce more types of tissue than has previously been thought.
Centrifugation redistributes factors determining cleavage patterns in leech embryos.
The Nanos gradient in Drosophila embryos is generated by translational regulation.
TLDR
Coupling suggests a model in which the polarized distribution of nos protein is generated primarily by translational control and that nos mRNA localization is a byproduct of this regulation, at least in part.
