}Repair of massive rotator cuff tears is technically difficult but often feasible. Technical and biological challenges to a successful repair include inelastic poor-quality tendon tissue, scarring, muscle atrophy, and fatty infiltration. Fatty infiltration of the involved rotator cuff muscles has been identified as an important negative prognostic factor for the outcome after repair of massive rotator cuff tears. Tendon transfer is a good option for young patients and manual laborers with an…

Arthroscopic Partial Repair of Massive Contracted Rotator Cuff Tears
- Medicine
- 2014
Through this partial repair, the massive rotators cuff tear can be converted to the “functional rotator cuff tear” and provide improvement in pain and functional outcomes in patient’s shoulder.
Massive and Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears

Based on the results of this experimental study, it is concluded that the PGA sheet scaffold material allows for the regeneration of the tendon-to-tendon as well as tendon- to-bone interface in an animal model.

The purpose of this article is to review treatment options and clinical outcomes for the management of massive rotator cuff tears.
Partial Rotator Cuff Repair for Massive Rotator Cuff Repair
- Medicine
- 2018
There is significant evidence to show that partial rotator cuff repair may significantly improve shoulder function, and more studies are required to determine whether these gains are retained over long-term follow-up.
Arthroscopic Debridement and Biceps Tenotomy/Tenodesis for the Management of Massive Rotator Cuff Tears
- MedicineOperative Techniques in Orthopaedics
- 2018
The preferred surgical technique for arthroscopic debridement and biceps tenotomy or tenodesis when clinically indicated is described, which can improve pain and lead to a quicker recovery in patients with large rotator cuff tears.

Older patients with chronic, massive rotator cuff tears with pseudoparalysis can achieve predictable, often excellent clinical results with a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.
Massive and Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears: Defining the Problem
- Medicine
- 2020
Imbalance of the force couples results in unstable kinematics of the glenohumeral joint, causing the remaining shoulder function to be sustained by a significantly increased compensatory deltoid force.
Current Concepts and Recent Trends in Arthroscopic Treatment of Large to Massive Rotator Cuff Tears: A Review

Current studies on the assessment and arthroscopic treatment of large-to-massive rotator cuff tears, whether repairable or irreparable, to aid in developing a consensus on future treatment directions are reviewed.

Management of Massive Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears: The Role of Tendon Transfer*†
- MedicineInstructional course lectures

In the case of an irreparable subscapularis tendon tear, pain relief and stability seem to be reliably achieved by a split pectoralis major transfer; however, functional improvement is less certain because the biomechanics associated with this tendon transfer do not appear to be optimal.
