Based on high precision measurements of the distances to nearby galaxies with the Hubble telescope, we have determined the radii of the zero velocity spheres for the local group, R0 = 0.96±0.03Mpc, and for the group of galaxies around M 81/M 82, 0.89±0.05Mpc. These yield estimates of MT = (1.29±0.14)· 1012 M⊙ and (1.03±0.17)· 1012 M⊙, respectively, for the total masses of these groups. The R0 method allows us to determine the mass ratios for the two brightest members in both groups, as well. By…
The Hubble Flow around the Centaurus A/M83 Galaxy Complex
We present Hubble Space Telescope ACS images and color-magnitude diagrams for 24 nearby galaxies in and near the constellation of Centaurus with radial velocities VLG < 550 km s-1. Distances are
Dynamical history of the Local Group in ΛCDM
The positions and velocities of galaxies in the Local Group (LG) measure the gravitational field within it. This is mostly due to the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31). We constrain their masses
Infall of Nearby Galaxies into the Virgo Cluster as Traced with Hubble Space Telescope
We measured the tip of the red giant branch distances to nine galaxies in the direction to the Virgo cluster using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. These distances put
Cosmic flow around local massive galaxies
Aims. We use accurate data on distances and radial velocities of galaxies around the Local Group, as well as around 14 other massive nearby groups, to estimate their radius of the zero-velocity
The missing dwarf galaxies of the Local Group
We study the Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxy population predicted by the APOSTLE ΛCDM cosmological hydrodynamics simulations. These indicate that: (i) the total mass within 3 Mpc of the Milky
The observed infall of galaxies towards the Virgo cluster
We examine the velocity field of galaxies around the Virgo cluster induced by its overdensity. We have studied the velocity-distance relation in Virgocentric coordinates using a sample of 1792
On the Spin Bias of Satellite Galaxies in the Local Group-like Environment
We utilize the Millennium-II simulation databases to study the spin bias of dark subhalos in the Local Group-like systems which have two prominent satellites with comparable masses. Selecting the
A Bound Violation on the Galaxy Group Scale: the Turn-Around Radius of NGC 5353/4
The first observational evidence for the violation of the maximum turn-around radius on the galaxy group scale is presented. The NGC 5353/4 group is chosen as an ideal target for our investigation of
Here we present a kinematic study of the Galactic halo out to a radius of ∼ 60 kpc, using 4664 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars selected from the SDSS/SEGUE survey, to determine key dynamical
We report the discovery of two new globular clusters in the remote halos of M81 and M82 in the M81 Group based on Hubble Space Telescope archive images. They are brighter than typical globular

The Local Group and Other Neighboring Galaxy Groups
Over the last few years, rapid progress has been made in distance measurements for nearby galaxies based on the magnitude of stars on the tip of the red giant branch. Current CCD surveys with the
Radial and Transverse Velocities of Nearby Galaxies
Analysis of the peculiar velocities of the galaxies should take account of the uncertainties in both redshifts and distances. We show how this can be done by a numerical application of the action
A Catalog of Neighboring Galaxies
We present an all-sky catalog of 451 nearby galaxies, each having an individual distance estimate D 10 Mpc or a radial velocity VLG -17.0, which contribute about 4% to the local luminosity density,
A Study of Edge-On Galaxies with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys. I. Initial Results
We present the initial results of a Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys snapshot survey of 16 nearby, edge-on, late-type galaxies covering a range in distance from 2 to 19 Mpc. The
The Redshift-Distance Relation. IXa. Reinterpretation of the Local Group Deceleration Data Emphasizing the Kahn-Woltjer Mass Determination
The velocity-distance data for the nearest 15 galaxies are reexamined relative to the predicted deceleration curves for the idealized Local Group (LG) dynamical model of Sandage (1986). The
The Extinction and Distance of Maffei 1
We have obtained low- and high-resolution spectra of the core of the highly reddened elliptical galaxy Maffei 1. From these data, we have obtained the first measurement of the Mg2 index and have
Probing the Multiphase Interstellar Medium of the Dwarf Starburst Galaxy NGC 625 with Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Spectroscopy
We present new Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) spectroscopy of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 625. These observations probe multiple phases of the interstellar medium (ISM), including
The very local Hubble flow
We present Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of eighteen galaxies situated in the vicinity of the Local Group (LG) as part of an ongoing snapshot survey of nearby galaxies. Their distances derived
First year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations: Determination of cosmological parameters
WMAP precision data enable accurate testing of cosmological models. We find that the emerging standard model of cosmology, a flat -dominated universe seeded by a nearly scale-invariant adiabatic
The redshift-distance relation. IX: Perturbation of the very nearby velocity field by the mass of the Local Group
Une deceleration de l'expansion cosmologique locale peut etre presente dans les donnees relatives aux galaxies et aux groupes de galaxies de distances inferieures a 10 Mpc. L'effet est faible, a la
