In the pockets of proteins and in solution, light-harvesting molecules are subject to a variety of interactions which fine-tune their photophysical properties. This makes it difficult to distinguish which of their photophysical features are intrinsic (due to their structure) versus those that arise out of these specific environmental interactions. Thus, there has been considerable interest in probing the photophysical properties of a number of different light-harvesters, especially porphyrins…
