  • Over the past hundred years, mass spectrometers have developed to the point where they are used to identify and quantify a huge range of different analytes ranging from the elemental gases through to the largest of the biopolymers – proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides. A brief overview of the components that make up a mass spectrometer is presented, covering in particular the different types of ion sources, methods of ionization, and mass analyzers and their characteristics.
