We explore possible systematic errors in the mass measurements of stellar mass black holes (BHs). We find that significant errors can arise from the assumption of zero or constant emission from the accretion flow, which is commonly used when determining orbital inclination by modeling ellipsoidal variations. For A0620?00, the system with the best available data, we show that typical data sets and analysis procedures can lead to systematic underestimates of the inclination by 10? or more. A… Expand
The Origin of Black Hole Spin in Galactic Low-Mass X-ray Binaries
Galactic field black hole (BH) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are believed to form in situ via the evolution of isolated binaries. In the standard formation channel, these systems survived a commonExpand
On the formation of galactic black hole low-mass X-ray binaries
Currently, there are 24 black hole (BH) X-ray binary systems that have been dynamically confirmed in the Galaxy. Most of them are low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) comprised of a stellar-mass BH and aExpand
A SWIFT SURVEY OF ACCRETION ONTO STELLAR-MASS BLACK HOLES
We present a systemic analysis of all of the stellar-mass black hole binaries (confirmed and candidate) observed by the Swift observatory up to 2010 June. The broad Swift bandpass enables a trace ofExpand
Precise mass and spin measurements for a stellar-mass black hole through X-ray timing: the case of GRO J1655-40
We present a systematic analysis of the fast time variability properties of the transient black hole binary GRO J1655-40, based on the complete set of RossiXTE observations. We demonstrate that theExpand
Dynamical formation of Black Hole Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries in the field - an alternative to common envelope
Very wide binaries (> 500 AU) are subject to numerous encounters with flying-by stars in the Galactic field and can be perturbated into highly eccentric orbits (e ~ 0.99). For such systems tidalExpand
Masses of the visual components and black holes in X-ray novae: Effects of proximity of the components
It is shown that the approximation of the complex, tidally distorted shape of a star as a circular disc with local line profiles and a linear limb-darkening law, which is usually applied whenExpand
BlackCAT: A catalogue of stellar-mass black holes in X-ray transients
During the last ~50 years, the population of black hole candidates in X-ray binaries has increased considerably with 59 Galactic objects detected in transient low-mass X-ray binaries, plus a few inExpand
The Mass of the Black Hole in the X-ray Binary Nova Muscae 1991
The optical counterpart of the black-hole soft X-ray transi e t Nova Muscae 1991 has brightened by ∆V ≈ 0.8 mag since its return to quiescence 23 years ago. We present th e first clear evidence thatExpand
X-Ray Binaries
This chapter discusses the implications of X-ray binaries on our knowledge of Type Ibc and Type II supernovae. X-ray binaries contain accreting neutron stars and stellar--mass black holes which areExpand
SPECTRAL PROPERTIES OF X-RAY BINARIES IN CENTAURUS A
We present a spectral investigation of X-ray binaries (XBs) in NGC 5128 (Cen A), using six 100 ks Chandra observations taken over two months in 2007. We divide our sample into thermally andExpand

THE BLACK HOLE MASS DISTRIBUTION IN THE GALAXY
We use dynamical mass measurements of 16 black holes in transient low-mass X-ray binaries to infer the stellar black hole mass distribution in the parent population. We find that the observations areExpand
THE MASS DISTRIBUTION OF STELLAR BLACK HOLES
We examine the distribution of masses of black holes in transient low-mass X-ray binary systems. A Bayesian analysis suggests that it is probable that six of the seven systems with measured massExpand
THE INCLINATION OF THE SOFT X-RAY TRANSIENT A0620–00 AND THE MASS OF ITS BLACK HOLE
We analyze photometry of the soft X-ray transient A0620−00 spanning nearly 30 years, including previously published and previously unpublished data. Previous attempts to determine the inclination ofExpand
Optical Observations of GRO J1655?40 in Quiescence. I. A Precise Mass for the Black Hole Primary
We report photometric and spectroscopic observations of the black hole binary GRO J1655-40 in complete quiescence. In contrast to the 1995 photometry, the light curves from 1996 are almost completelyExpand
GRO J0422+32: The Lowest Mass Black Hole?*
We have obtained optical and infrared photometry of the soft X-ray transient GRO J0422+32. From this photometry, we find a secondary star spectral type of M1, and an extinction of AV = 0.74 ± 0.09.Expand
Theoretical black hole mass distributions
We derive the theoretical distribution function of black hole masses by studying the formation processes of black holes. We use the results of recent two-dimensional simulations of stellar coreExpand
Chemical Abundances of the Secondary Star in the Black Hole X-Ray Binary XTE J1118+480
Following recent abundance measurements of Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, and Ni in the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480 using medium-resolution Keck II ESI spectra of the secondary star, we perform a detailedExpand
The Inclination Angle and Mass of the Black Hole in XTE J1118+480
We have obtained optical and infrared photometry of the quiescent soft X-ray transient XTE J1118+480. In addition to optical and J-band variations, we present the first observed H- and Ks-bandExpand
The mass distribution of stellar-mass black holes
We perform a Bayesian analysis of the mass distribution of stellar-mass black holes using the observed masses of 15 low-mass X-ray binary systems undergoing Roche lobe overflow and 5 high-mass,Expand
Orbital Parameters for the Soft X-Ray Transient 4U 1543–47: Evidence for a Black Hole
Spectroscopic observations of the soft X-ray transient 4U 1543-47 reveal a radial velocity curve with a period of P = 1.123 ± 0.008 days and a semiamplitude of K2 = 124 ± 4 km s-1. The resulting massExpand
