Abstract Mass-gatherings events provide a difficult setting for which to plan an appropriate emergency medical response. Many of the variables that affect the level and types of medical needs, have not been fully researched. This review examines these variables. Methods: An extensive review was conducted using the computerized databases Medline and Healthstar from 1977 through May 2002. Articles selected contained information pertaining to mass-gathering variables. These articles were read…
Patient Presentation Trends at 15 Mass-Gathering Events in South Australia
TLDR
The results of the study suggest that several weather, crowd, and event variables influence the type and number of patient presentations observed at mass-gathering events.
Minimum Data Set for Mass-Gathering Health Research and Evaluation: A Discussion Paper
TLDR
The need for consistency in mass-gathering data collection and biomedical reporting is discussed, and a minimum data set with a data dictionary is proposed in an effort to generate conversation about a possible agreed minimum amount and type of information that should be collected consistently for research and evaluation at mass gatherings.
Mass-gathering medical care: a retrospective analysis
TLDR
The patient demographic highlighted in the results can be used to plan and prepare for future mass gatherings in many different contexts and add to the body of knowledge by providing conditions that are commonly seen in a large-scale mass gathering setting.
Mass-Gathering Medical Care: Retrospective Analysis of Patient Presentations over Five Years at a Multi-Day Mass Gathering
Introduction: There is a scarcity of analytical data regarding mass-gathering medical care. The purpose of this study was to identify and evaluate the range and nature of illness and injury for
Mass Gathering Medical Care: Resource Document for the National Association of EMS Physicians Position Statement
TLDR
Infiltration of jurisdictional EMS and community hospital medical leadership, and emergency practitioners into these processes will ensure that on-site care, transport, and transition to acute care at appropriate receiving facilities is consistent with, and fully integrated into the community's medical care system, while fulfilling the needs of event participants.
Planning Volunteer Responses to Low-Volume Mass Gatherings: Do Event Characteristics Predict Patient Workload?
TLDR
For low-volume mass gatherings, planning based solely on anticipated event size may be flawed, and could lead to inappropriate levels of first-aid coverage, and this study highlights the importance of considering other factors, such as event type and patient characteristics, when determining appropriate first- aid resourcing for low- volume events.
Weather and Environmental Hazards at Mass Gatherings
TLDR
Mass gathering events have an enormous potential to place a severe strain on the local health care system, and prior health resource and environmental planning for heat & cold-related illness, lightning & storms, and disease outbreak can advance emergency preparedness and response to potential disasters.

TLDR
Several features of the event environment influence patient presentation rates, and that the prediction of patient load at these events is complex and multifactorial, can improve planning and the provision of health care services at mass gatherings.

TLDR
The issues that a doctor should consider if he or she chooses to become involved in the delivery of medical care to such populations, as well as the evidence suggesting that a physician should be involved in most such gatherings are reviewed.
The largest mass gathering
An organised mass gathering has predictable medical problems. Yet emergency care at these events has been criticised as haphazard at best and dangerous at worst, with a wide variation of medical care
Planning for an annual episodic mass gathering: emergency department and clinic utilization in Yellowstone.
TLDR
Utilization analysis revealed differences between conventional mass gatherings and the mass gatherings in Yellowstone, suggesting conventional mass gathering emergency medical service models may not be an appropriate model for planning health care in a national park.

The definition and characteristics of medical care at mass gatherings at large events are described and disaster and mass casualty planning implications also are described.
