Martensitic Transformation Precursors: Phonon Theory and Critical Experiments

title={Martensitic Transformation Precursors: Phonon Theory and Critical Experiments},

This paper addresses martensitic precursor phenomena from new theoretical and experimental perspectives. Driven by a phonon domain hypothesis, based on the premise of incomplete phonon softening, and employing Born's dynamical approach to statistical mechanics of anharmonic crystal lattices, we develop a Gruneisen-type phonon theory that predicts a pre-martensitic transition via "spinodal decomposition" of phonon populations and, without resort to static defects, explains the precursor… Expand

Theory and experimental evidence of phonon domains and their roles in pre-martensitic phenomena
Pre-martensitic phenomena, also called martensite precursor effects, have been known for decades while yet remain outstanding issues. This paper addresses pre-martensitic phenomena from newExpand

Phonon Theory of Martensitic Transformation Precursors
A phonon theory of precursor phenomena in martensitic phase transformations is developed. Extending Gr\"uneisen theory of thermal expansion, this theory addresses the effects of deformation-dependentExpand
Broken Dynamic Symmetry and Phase Transition Precursor
Symmetry breaking is a central concept of Landau phase transition theory, which, however, only considers time-averaged static symmetry of crystal lattice while neglects dynamic symmetry of latticeExpand
Dynamical Theory of Crystal Lattices
Although Born and Huang's classic work on the dynamics of crystal lattices was published over thirty years ago, the book remains the definitive treatment of the subject. It begins with a briefExpand
Understanding the phase transitions of the Ni2MnGa magnetic shape memory system from first principles.
The free energies of the austenite, the (modulated) premartensite and the unmodulated martensite of Ni2MnGa are determined using density functional theory and including quasiharmonic phonons andExpand
Physical metallurgy of Ti–Ni-based shape memory alloys
Abstract Ti–Ni-based alloys are quite attractive functional materials not only as practical shape memory alloys with high strength and ductility but also as those exhibiting unique physicalExpand
In Situ Three-Dimensional Reciprocal-Space Mapping of Diffuse Scattering Intensity Distribution and Data Analysis for Precursor Phenomenon in Shape-Memory Alloy
Diffuse scattering contains rich information on various structural disorders, thus providing a useful means to study the nanoscale structural deviations from the average crystal structures determinedExpand
