This is the story of a marriage that ended in sordid litigation. Relationships which go to pieces commonly leave more substantial historical records behind and, as such, they are perhaps of limited general significance except as examples of earlier human behaviour in moments of tension or despair. But this marriage also existed within a distinctive social and religious context that of the early Protestant nobility of France, mainly Picard and Breton
