Versican is a major chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan of vascularized connective tissues whose eponym reflects its functional versatility in macromolecular affinity and interactions. In this report we have localized the versican gene (CSPG2) to the long arm of human chromosome 5 by utilizing a combination of somatic cell hybrids, Southern blotting, polymerase chain reaction, and chromosomal in situ hybridization.
