Slow rusting is considered a crucial component of durable resistance to wheat leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina and is often expressed in the form of a prolonged latent period. Selection for a longer latent period is considered an effective approach to developing wheat cultivars with improved durable resistance to leaf rust.
