Fifty cosmids have been mapped to metaphase chromosomes by fluorescence in situ hybridization under conditions that suppress signals from repetitive DNA sequences. The cosmid clones were isolated from a flow-sorted human X chromosome library. Thirty-eight of the clones were localized to chromosome X and 12 to autosomes such as chromosomes 3, 7, 8, 14, and 17.
