We presenta methodologyfor deriving emissionsof volatile organiccompounds(VOC) from space-based columnobservationsof formaldehyde(HCHO), andapply it to data from the GOME satelliteinstrumentover North Americaduring July 1996. The HCHO columnis a proxy for VOC emissions,subjectto displacement errorswhich increasewith theVOC lifetime.
