Abstract Blue-ice areas (BIAs) and their geographical distribution in Antarctica were mapped using Landsat-7 ETM+ images with 15 m spatial resolution obtained during the 1999–2003 austral summers and covering the area north of 82.5° S, and a snow grain-size image of the MODIS-based Mosaic of Antarctica (MOA) dataset with 125 m grid spacing acquired during the 2003/04 austral summer from 82.5°S to the South Pole. A map of BIAs was created with algorithms of thresholds based on band ratio and…
Mapping Radar Glacier Zones and Dry Snow Line in the Antarctic Peninsula Using Sentinel-1 Images
Surface snowmelt causes changes in mass and energy balance, and endangers the stabilities of the ice shelves in the Antarctic Peninsula (AP). The dynamic changes of the snow and ice conditions in the
AntarcticaLC2000: The new Antarctic land cover database for the year 2000
Antarctica plays a key role in global energy balance and sea level change. It has been conventionally viewed as a whole ice body with high albedo in General Circulation Models or Regional Climate
Blue-Ice Extraction and Classification in Antarctica Using MOA Images
ABSTRACT Zhang, X.; Zhou, C.; Yuan, L., and E, D., 2020. Blue-ice extraction and classification in Antarctica using MOA images. In: Yang, D.F. and Wang, H. (eds.), Recent Advances in Marine Geology
An Accurate and Automated Method for Identifying and Mapping Exposed Rock Outcrop in Antarctica Using Landsat 8 Images
The threshold of expose rock extraction is established so as to ensure the applicability of the same threshold for exposed rock extraction in all images, and the method developed can be quickly applied for extraction and mapping of large areas of exposed rocks using Landsat 8.
Chronostratigraphy of blue ice at the Larsen Glacier in Northern Victoria Land, East Antarctica
Abstract. Blue ice areas (BIAs) allow for the collection of large-sized old ice samples in a cost-effective way because deep ice outcrops and make old ice samples available close to the surface.
Antarctic Snowmelt Detected by Diurnal Variations of AMSR-E Brightness Temperature
Surface snowmelt in Antarctica decreased temporally and spatially from 2002 to 2011 and a set of controlled experiments based on the microwave emission model of layered snow were conducted to study the changes of the vertically polarized 36.5 GHz Tb (Δ36V) during the transitions from dry to wet snow regimes.
GIS-Supported Airfield Selection near Zhongshan Station, East Antarctica, based on Multi-Mission Remote Sensing Data
Abstract As Antarctica attracts increasing attention in global climate change studies, the demand for field expeditions has increased in recent decades. Aircraft has become the most efficient mode of

Blue-ice areas in Antarctica derived from NOAA AVHRR satellite data
Abstract We have mapped Antarctic blue-ice areas using the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Antarctica cloud-free image
Satellite Monitoring of Blue-Ice Extent in Grove Mountains,Antarctica
The series images of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiomete(MODIS) and Landsat are used to track seasonal and interannual variations of blue-ice extent in the Grove Mountains on East
Satellite monitoring of blue-ice extent near Byrd Glacier, Antarctica
Abstract We use satellite images to track seasonal and interannual variations in blue-ice extent over the past 30 years near Byrd Glacier on the East Antarctic plateau. The study areas have low slope
Blue ice areas and their topographical properties in the Lambert glacier, Amery Iceshelf system using Landsat ETM+, ICESat laser altimetry and ASTER GDEM data
Abstract Blue ice extent and its geographical distribution during the three years from December 1999–January 2003 have been mapped together with rock exposure areas for the entire Lambert-Amery
Investigating Climate Change by Digital Analysis of Blue Ice Extent on Satellite Images of Antarctica
Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) and SPOT data collected two years apart from an identical area of Dronning (Queen) Maud Land, Antarctica, have been analyzed to detect variations in surface features
The surface accumulation and ablation of a coastal blue-ice area near Cap Prudhomme, Terre Adélie, Antarctica
A record of accumulation and ablation from a network of 47 stakes at a coastal blue-ice area in Terre Adélie, Antarctica, is presented and analyzed. The record covers early 2004 to early 2006, from
The Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica
Ice and snow-type classification in the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica, using Landsat-TM data and ground radiometer measurements
The aim of the present project was to find simple satellite-based methods to be used in glaciological-climatological research in Antarctica. A Landsat-TM image from 16 February 1991 was used together
An improved Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica
A revised Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica (LIMA) is presented, using the 1073 multi-band scenes of the original Land-sat-7 ETM+ LIMA image collection available at the United States Geological
