In the realm of public ideology, the Mexican Revolution was preceded and accompanied by an upsurge in nationalism. Intellectuals as diverse as Andres Molina Enriquez and Jose Vasconcelos denounced the sterile aping of European doctrines which had characterized the Liberal Reforma of the 1850s, in favour of measures which were based on colonial precedent.
