Anabolic steroids are frequently abused, thus increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, despite the known unfavorable influence on lipid profiles. We report on a young bodybuilder who presented with ventricular tachycardia as the first manifestation of severe underlying coronary heart disease. Coronary angiogram revealed severe stenotic lesions in the right coronary artery and the left descending coronary artery, and hypokinetic regions corresponded to posterolateral and anterior…
Ischemic stroke related to anabolic abuse.
TLDR
A case of a 26-year-old male amateur athlete who suffered a posterior territory ischemic stroke related to anabolic steroid abuse is reported, and physicians should be aware of this kind of complication.
Androgenic anabolic steroid abuse and the cardiovascular system.
TLDR
Various lines of evidence involving a variety of pathophysiologic mechanisms suggest an increased risk for cardiovascular disease in users of anabolic androgenic steroids.
Anabolic steroids, acute myocardial infarction and polycythemia: A case report and review of the literature
TLDR
It is suggested that the chronic and recent “stacked” use of intramuscular testosterone as well as the resultant polycythemia and likely increased plasma viscosity may have been contributing factors to this cardiovascular event, in addition to traditional coronary risk factors.
Cardiovascular consequences of anabolic steroid use
TLDR
New data is added to the concept that AS use can place the participant at an increased CV risk, most notably a decreased diastolic (relaxation) function that suggests a stiffer left ventricle in the AS users.
Missbrauch von androgenen anabolen Steroiden: Effekte auf das Herz-Kreislauf-System
TLDR
Various lines of evidence involving a variety of pathophysiologic mechanisms suggest an increased risk for cardiovascular disease in users of anabolic androgenic steroids.
Sudden cardiac death during anabolic steroid abuse: morphologic and toxicologic findings in two fatal cases of bodybuilders
TLDR
These findings support an emerging consensus that the effects of vigorous weight training, combined with anabolic steroid use and increased androgen sensitivity, may predispose these young men to myocardial injury and even SCD.
Cardiac hypertrophy in deceased users of anabolic androgenic steroids: an investigation of autopsy findings.
Coronary Artery Profile of Young Kuwaiti Males on Anabolic Steroids
TLDR
Investigation of young Kuwaiti male patients’ ≤ 30 years of age who underwent coronary angiogram during 2014 to 2017 found 31.6% were on anabolic steroids, it was contributed to by LAD and RCA lesions along with slow flow phenomenon.
Anabolic Steroids and Cardiovascular Risk
TLDR
The use of AS has been linked to the appearance of concentric left ventricular hypertrophy as well as endothelial dysfunction but the data again remains controversial, and continued efforts to fully document the cardiovascular health consequences of AS use are important.

The effects of self-administered anabolic steroids (AS) on lipoproteins, liver function, and blood pressure were studied in male amateur body builders. Twenty body builders were studied at the end of
Myocardial infarction in young patients: an analysis by age subsets.
TLDR
Young patients entering the hospital have an excellent 1 year prognosis, but those with prior infarction in whom there are selected abnormal findings at hospital discharge comprise a subgroup that may benefit from early aggressive management.

TLDR
The concentration- and time-dependent effects of testosterone cypionate (TC), stanozolol (S), and fluoxymesterone (F) on primary myocardial cell cultures were described and cellular injury was evaluated by alterations in beating activity, induction of morphological alterations, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, neutral red retention, and tetrazolium (MTT) formazan production.

TLDR
No significant influence of the anabolic steroid stanozolol either on the extent of atherosclerotic involvement or on HDL or LDL cholesterol is found.
Contrasting effects of testosterone and stanozolol on serum lipoprotein levels.
TLDR
It is concluded that the undesirable lipoprotein effects of 17-alpha-alkylated steroids given orally are different from those of parenteral testosterone and that the latter may be preferable in many clinical situations.
