Bariatric surgery is performed for clinically severe obesity and includes jejunoileal bypass, which is designed to produce weight loss through malabsorption, and the gastric restrictive operations--gastric bypass, gastrogastrostomy, and gastroplasty--which produce weight loss through restriction of volume of intake.
