BACKGROUND
Since the Food and Drug Administration approved DBS, there has been a surge in the number of centers providing the procedure. There is currently no consensus regarding appropriate screening procedures, necessary training of individuals providing the therapy, the need for an interdisciplinary team, or guidelines for the management of complications. An increasing number of patients come to experienced DBS centers after unsatisfactory results from DBS surgery. An attempt is made herein…

Compared with findings in prior studies, the quality of DBS referrals has improved and the increase in referral of possible future candidates and poor candidates may reflect greater confidence in the procedure.
REOPERATION FOR SUBOPTIMAL OUTCOMES AFTER DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION SURGERY
- Medicine, PsychologyNeurosurgery
- 2008
An unblinded retrospective chart review of DBS patients with unsatisfactory outcomes who presented for reoperation found that lead placement beyond a 2- to 3-mm window resulted in inadequate clinical benefit, and, in 1 patient, revision improved outcome.
DBS Revision Surgery: Indications and Nuances
- MedicineSurgery for Parkinson's Disease
- 2018
This chapter reviews methods for evaluating patients presenting with DBS failure to identify appropriate candidates for various surgical salvage procedures, and presents successful decision-making strategies and surgical techniques for carrying out these operations.
DBS Candidates That Fall Short on a Levodopa Challenge Test: Alternative and Important Indications
- MedicineThe neurologist
- 2011
Although motor response to levodopa remains the primary selection criteria for DBS candidacy in Parkinson disease, patients who do not meet the 30% threshold and have disabling symptoms may still benefit from DBS.
Deep Brain Stimulation
- MedicineThe neurologist
- 2007
DBS is an effective surgical treatment for movement disorders with sustained long-term benefits and may be the preferred site of stimulation for dystonia with movement scores typically improved by 75% in patients with primary dySTONia.
The current state of postoperative imaging in the presence of deep brain stimulation electrodes
- MedicineMovement disorders : official journal of the Movement Disorder Society
- 2017
Although the potential danger imposed by MRI scanning in the presence of electrodes should not be disregarded, the fear of such procedures should not impact patient care, and postoperative MRI scanning is invaluable for proper electrode placement verification and diagnostic applications.

- MedicineNeurosurgery
- 2019
Patients with persistent OFFmotor symptoms after STN-DBS should be screened for levodopa-responsiveness, which can serve as a benchmark for best achievable motor benefit.
State of the Art for Deep Brain Stimulation Therapy in Movement Disorders: A Clinical and Technological Perspective
- MedicineIEEE Reviews in Biomedical Engineering
- 2016
The goal of this review is to describe the current status of DBS in the context of movement disorders, outline the mechanisms of action for DBS, discuss the standard surgical and imaging techniques, and discuss the patient selection and clinical outcomes in each of the movement disorders.

- MedicineJournal of neurosurgery
- 2014
The authors confirmed that the overall risk of both procedure- and hardware-related adverse events is acceptably low and offered advice on how to avoid the most common complications.
