The treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected pregnant women is one of the most effective HIV-prevention interventions known. With prenatal testing, antiviral therapy, scheduled cesarean section when indicated, and formula feeding when feasible, rates of neonatal and perinatal HIV infection can diminish significantly.
