Malignant mesothelioma is a diffuse tumor arising in the pleura, peritoneum, or other serosal surface and is closely associated with asbestos exposure. An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 cases are diagnosed each year in the United States. Although there are individual case reports and small series detailing the clinical aspects of mesothelioma, few studies examine a large series of patients with malignant mesothelioma from the clinical perspective. This study reports on the findings of 238 cases of…

Changing Pattern in Malignant Mesothelioma Survival

Mesothelioma in Mongolia: case report

The first reported case of mesothelioma in Mongolia is described and the creation of an asbestos related disease registry is recommended in order to properly track asbestos related diseases in the country.

Asbestos Exposure and Histological Sub-Type of Malignant Mesothelioma

There was no strong evidence of a consistent role of asbestos exposure indicators in determining the histological sub-type of MM, and 29 exposure codes that include occupational, residential and environmental exposures as well as ‘no known’ and ‘unknown’ exposure were considered.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: correlation between CT imaging features and histologic subtypes

Sarcomatoid type of MPM showed significant correlation with more aggressive imaging features of metastases and visceral infiltration as compared to epithelioid type.

Characterization of a French series of female cases of mesothelioma.

These results will allow hypotheses to be generated about associations between mesothelioma and non-occupational asbestos exposure, X-ray exposure and history of respiratory disease.

Localized multiple malignant epithelioid peritoneal mesotheliomas arising from the hepatoduodenal ligament and diaphragm: a case report

It is recommended that multiple malignant epithelioid mesotheliomas be included in the differential diagnosis for patients with subcapsular hepatic tumors and early diagnosis and treatment, particularly with the localized type, could lead to long-term survival of the patient.

A Case of Localized Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma

A 72-year-old man found in computed tomography and MRI to have a tumor 80mm in diameter ex-tending the right lower abdomen, necessitating open laparotomy resection, has a rare case of respectable localized malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

Life Expectancy in Pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Life expectancies were markedly reduced from normal, even amongst 5-year survivors with the most favorable characteristics and treatment options, and survival improved only modestly over the study period.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with lymph node metastasis that originated in the transverse colon

An extremely rare case of resection of localized biphasic malignant peritoneal mesothelioma of the transverse colon of a 72-year-old man who died 18 months after surgery due to lack of postoperative chemotherapy.

Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma in a Patient with Systemic Sclerosis: The First Report

A 58-year-old never-smoker female, previously diagnosed with limited cutaneous SSc, who presented with chest pain on the left side, dyspnea and circumferential nodular left pleural thickening is described, the first report of MPM in a patient with SSc.

In south east England most cases of malignant mesothelioma are associated with asbestos exposure, and clinical features do not differentiate between asbestos related and non-asbestos related disease.

Overall, treated patients had significantly longer survival than untreated patients, however, there was no significant difference in survival with respect to the type of treatment given: surgery, chemotherapy, talc poudrage or their combination.

The recurring occurrence of mesotheliomas in younger people without known asbestos exposure needs the urgent investigation of other inducing factors for mesotHeliomas, primarily amphibole asbestos.

Diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma and asbestos exposure

The incidence of mesothelioma will continue to rise with the increased use of asbestos until about 40 years after adequate protective measures have been taken, it is thought.

A number of important features of testicular mesothelioma are emphasized; a wide age range with occasional occurrence at a young age, a wide morphologic spectrum with regard to degree of differentiation, and an aggressive natural history with a potential for late recurrence or metastasis of even well-differentiated tumors, suggesting the need for initial aggressive surgical treatment.
