This article presents a discussion of the role that males who have sex with males (MSM) have in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in India. Among South Asian countries, India has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS, in which the proportion attributable to MSM may be under-reported, and not well understood by policy makers. A discussion of the social and cultural context in which males have sex with other males includes sexual behavior patterns, religion, socio-cultural factors, and legal considerations.
