In five maternity centres in urban and rural Zaire we evaluated the maternal prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum parasitaemia and recorded fever, the frequency of abortions and stillbirths, newborn birth weights and the feasibility of delivering antimalarial chemoprophylaxis.
