Sensemaking has become an umbrella term for efforts at building intelligent systems. This essay examines sensemaking from various perspectives to see if we can separate the things that are doable from the things that seem more like pie-in-the-sky

Figures from this paper

WHY “ CONTESTED ” CI ? Sensemaking
TLDR
This paper presents the rationale for treating Contested Collective Intelligence (CCI) as a significant and distinctive dimension of the broader Collective Intelligence design space for organizations, and motivates a set of requirements for an ideal CCI platform.
A Study of Perceived Sensemaking and Uncertainty When Using Sense Map
TLDR
This intended user study aims to understand how users use this Sense Map (SM) tool to build and organise their conceptual models of a network of concepts and relationships.
Cohere: A Prototype for Contested Collective Intelligence
TLDR
This paper presents the rationale for treating Contested Collective Intelligence (CCI) as a significant and distinctive dimension of the broader Collective Intelligence design space for organizations, and motivates a set of requirements for an ideal CCI platform.
Cohere : A prototype for contested collective intelligence Conference Item
TLDR
This paper presents the rationale for treating Contested Collective Intelligence (CCI) as a significant and distinctive dimension of the broader Collective Intelligence design space for organizations, and motivates a set of requirements for an ideal CCI platform.
Augmented Collaborative Spaces for Collective Sense Making : The Dicode Approach
TLDR
A novel approach to facilitate collective sense making via a collaboration platform which offers multiple views to collaboration and provides intelligent support to understand sense making behaviour by employing user and community modelling techniques is proposed.
The XMediaBox: Sensemaking through the Use of Knowledge Lenses
TLDR
This work demonstrates how information extraction is achieved using information extraction to acquire knowledge and create a semantic repository that can then be semantically searched.
Understanding together: sensemaking in collaborative information seeking
TLDR
An ethnographic study of the CIS practices of healthcare providers in a hospital emergency department is conducted to gain a conceptual understanding of when and how collaborative sensemaking occurs during CIS activities.
A resources model for distributed sensemaking
TLDR
It is argued that it is useful to elaborate DFM in several ways, including arguing for the idea of sensemaking as a quest for coherence, an idea that is seen as consistent with the DFM.
How sensemaking by people and artificial intelligence might involve different frames
TLDR
This paper considers how an artificial intelligence system that can be used to filter curriculum vitae (or résumés) might apply frames that result in socially unacceptable decisions.
Data-Frame Theory of Sensemaking as a Best Model for Intelligence
TLDR
A “data-frame” model of expert reasoning, originally proposed by Gary Klein and his colleagues, is applied as a transformational approach to intelligence creation and a case study is shown showing how the data-frame structure adds efficiency and clarity to intelligencecreation processes.

Keeping It Too Simple: How the Reductive Tendency Affects Cognitive Engineering
TLDR
The knowledge shield phenomenon suggests that it will take effort to change the reductive mindset that people might bring to design a CCS, and this work assumes that the cognitive engineers will invoke one or more knowledge shields when they are confronted with evidence that their understanding and planning involves a reductive understanding.
Human Problem Solving
TLDR
The aim of the book is to advance the understanding of how humans think by putting forth a theory of human problem solving, along with a body of empirical evidence that permits assessment of the theory.

This book describes the new perspective of naturalistic decision making. The point of departure is how people make decisions in complex, time-pressured, ambiguous, and changing environments. The
