Clinical observations confirm that the idiopathic epilepsies are neurodevelopmental disorders strongly influenced by genetic factors. Genetic epidemiological studies prove major genetic influences on two common forms of idiopathic epilepsy to be discussed here: rolandic epilepsy (RE) and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME).
